Mainly because people want to make as much money in the smallest amount of time. If you take henchies or other people your item drops are split with them. If you can 'farm' an area alone, it is often more profitable.
Also some people do it just for the challenge.

it's because any time there are other characters in your party (be they humans or henchies), the drops will be divided among all the characters.
(if you play in the beta event with henchies, you'll notice often the monsters won't drop anything -- that's because those drops were assigned to the henchies) -- whereas if you solo, all drops are for you alone.
it's a big difference -- if you, say, farm with 8 people or henchies, you will essentially only get 1/8 the drops that you get from farming alone.
anyway, welcome to the game.. hope you have fun this weekend.

That would be one of the reasons...but the vast majority of people who solo do so in order to make money faster, since when you solo, all of a monster's "loot" is assigned to you

More often than not, grouping is more of a pain. You'll get at least one person you can't stand who ruins the entire experience. Not to mention in the later parts of the game when making a full group of 8 that will actually stay for an hour long mission is near impossible. So you're reduced to henchmen, who can do the missions mind you, but it somewhat defeats the purpose of playing online.
So, you solo. Wealth, experience, quiet atmoshpere... the sense of god-like power.

Uh...I come from playing WOW...where you need to get groups of five to come together for around 3 hours for an average "dungeon", and groups of 20-40 to come to gether for a raid. Actually the reason I'm interested in GW is because I don't want to wait more than 15 minutes to get into the playing.

Basically to exploit the game and make as much money as possible.
Yeah, like Ruvaen said, greed. Greed for virtual money that doesn't really buy anything, at that.
If you're new, don't worry about soloing, just play the game how it was designed: as a team game and have fun.

You will get a better feel for how long it takes to get a team this weekend. It really depends on time of day and what mission. However, with henchmen you are alwyas ready to go in a second.
People solo for money or challenge. 99% for the money though.

I solo because its tough and fun and i solo with my ranger not some ragedy ass monk exploit, it gives you a sense of stealth and infiltration (riverside?) or soloing iron mines of moladune is a lot of fun too cept marcus and his jades XD. I found it great fun to explore things solo to sneaking past large groups unseen taking out smaller groups, like this i found rotscales castle or the shores north of beetletun they are quite a sight.

I agree with this.
Soloing gives a nice sense of achievement when you clear an area for the first time by yourself.
Hell it passes time while you're waiting for your guildies to WAKE UP.

Yes, its a thrill
I still remember my succesfull solo elementalist build. Then you must think back on the moment you just started Guild Wars. Makes you really feel godly
And also because people said elementalists couldn't solo or run ... (whatever). I just proved otherwise (every profession has its pros and cons trust me). Ok a droks run isn't possible for my ele yet, but won't keep me from trying
The same when I soloed the new queen in the desert, did it once just for the thrill, and when it happened I was so content with my achievement (and I add, she had no green for me, but could care less, never even bothered to farm here later wiht other or solo).

Not necessarily. The pursuit of money is too ambigious to consider under the classification of greed. I'd say if people were merely selling/buying on eBay that's more qualifying as greed. It seems more like a simple business practice. I have a 55hp monk; I invested at least 50k to purchase the armor, the equipment, and the runes. I also had to spend time to go out and "farm" areas to procure gold. Because of the ability to create more gold in a smaller space of time, this creates efficiency if my purpose was for gold. So because I invested time/money into a practice to create an efficient money-making process to be able to purchase items that will increase my character's ability to perform, I hardly see this as greed. If I wasn't putting so much time and effort into it then you could better qualify it as greed or if I was ravenous in my practices by procuring largely unnecessary dispoable income and utilizing n00bs as slaves to do my dirty work.
